The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has admonished advocates of the proposed New Oyo State with capital in Oyo town to build internal consensus if their agitation for state creation is to be achieved.
He gave this advice while hosting members of the Committee on the Creation of Ibadan and New Oyo State, led by Francis Adedayo and Saheed Malik, at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo, Ibadan, on Thursday.
It was earlier reported that Olubadan had, on Friday, September 26, 2025, publicly appealed for the creation of Ibadan state before President Bola Tinubu.
The monarch, who spoke after his installation and receiving the Staff of Office and Instrument of Office from Governor Seyi Makinde, urged Tinubu to make this a reality before 2027.
“My people sent me a message to Mr President. Mr President, they said the creation of Ibadan State is their priority,” Olubadan declared.
However, Ladoja, in a statement by his media aide, Adeola Oloko, in Ibadan, the state capital, on Thursday, noted that while the push for Ibadan state creation appears straightforward, disagreements over the name and proposed capital for New Oyo State could hinder progress.
“There are many interests already emerging. Iseyin wants to be a state capital. Agunrege is interested. Oyo is interested. Ogbomoso is silent. All these towns, including virgin lands, qualify to be state capitals.
“If truth be told, you need to build consensus. You need compromise. Oke-Ogun has 10 Local Governments, Ogbomoso has four. How much representation of Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso do we have here? You cannot wish them away,” he explained.
Also speaking, Ojelabi Morakinyo from Ibarapa, asserted that Ibarapa and Ibadan share a long-standing relationship and have no disputes regarding the proposed Ibadan State.
The meeting was attended by top traditional and community leaders, including the Osi Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, and the President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Sulaiman Ajewole.
