The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) on Thursday officially launched its Electric Mobility Programme with the rollout of more than 40 brand-new, zero-emission electric buses, instantly making Nigeria the continent’s operator of the single largest fleet of electric vehicles.
At a ceremony in the nation’s capital, PiCNG Executive Chairman, Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, OON, symbolically handed over the bus keys to transport operators and confirmed that the vehicles would be deployed immediately for public transportation in selected states.
“By the close of business today,” Ahmed declared, “the Federal Republic of Nigeria now operates the single largest fleet of electric vehicles in Africa. This is not just about buses; it is about fulfilling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to drastically cut transportation costs, diversify our energy sources, and deliver clean, reliable and affordable mobility to millions of Nigerians.”
While the administration continues its aggressive nationwide rollout of CNG-powered vehicles and conversion centres, Ahmed stressed that the simultaneous advance of electric mobility demonstrates Nigeria’s multi-pronged approach.
“We are not choosing one path over another,” he said. “We are building every viable path to energy competitiveness and sustainable transport.”
Closing the event, the PiCNG chairman promised rapid expansion ahead:“This is how we end 2025, with action, delivery and results. 2026 will be the year Nigeria becomes the undisputed leader in both CNG and electric mobility across Africa. More to come. The journey has only just begun. So help us God, Ameen.”
