The Sokoto State Government has issued a strong warning to residents in insecurity-affected communities, particularly in Jabo town, to stay away from sites impacted by recent explosions following a US-led airstrike on December 25, 2025, citing significant health hazards from explosive residues.
In a statement released by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, the advisory was prompted by reports of residents rushing to the scene in Jabo shortly after debris from munitions landed during the operation targeting suspected Islamic State camps.
The government emphasized that approaching such sites could lead to severe consequences for human health and the environment. Experts highlighted key risks, including:
Skin irritation or burns from contact with chemical residues;
Respiratory issues from inhaling toxic fumes;
Potential long-term toxicity from ingestion or extended exposure to explosive remnants.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens across Sokoto and called on local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and religious leaders in high-risk areas to step up public awareness campaigns about these dangers.
Authorities were also directed to cordon off affected explosion sites and restrict public access to prevent unintended exposure.
The government reassured residents of its ongoing efforts to enhance security throughout the state and urged continued cooperation from the public.
No civilian casualties were reported from the incident in Jabo, where munitions debris caused panic but no direct hits on populated areas.
