Shettima Heads to Abidjan for President Alassane Ouattara’s Fourth-Term Inauguration


Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the swearing-in ceremony of President Alassane Ouattara for a controversial fourth term in office.


The inauguration is scheduled for Monday, 8 December 2025, at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan.President Ouattara secured re-election on 25 October 2025 in a poll that has drawn mixed reactions across the region.


In a statement, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha, said VP Shettima will join other African heads of state and international dignitaries at the high-profile event.


Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire enjoy robust bilateral relations anchored on strong ECOWAS and African Union cooperation, a Bi-National Commission, and agreements spanning security, trade, agriculture, anti-trafficking, and the digital economy. 


A large Nigerian diaspora and vibrant informal cross-border trade further deepen ties between the two West African neighbours.Vice President Shettima is accompanied by: H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hon. Usman Zannah, Member, House of Representatives (Kaga/Gubio/Magumeri Federal Constituency)


The Vice President is expected to return to Abuja immediately after the ceremony.
