President Patrice Talon addressed the nation live on state television (ORTB) Sunday evening to announce that an attempted military coup earlier in the day had been swiftly neutralized by loyal security forces.
Appearing calm and resolute, the Beninese leader declared:“I want to reassure every citizen that the situation is completely under control. I invite all of you to calmly resume your normal activities from this very evening.”
President Talon emphasized that republican institutions remain intact and that security forces have been deployed across the country to guarantee public order and the safety of all citizens.
No further details about the identity of the plotters, arrests made, or the circumstances of the attempted takeover were disclosed during the brief address.
The announcement comes just hours after unconfirmed reports of unusual military movements in parts of the capital and the northern city of Kandi began circulating on social media.
Government sources confirmed that swift action by the presidential guard and intelligence services prevented the plot from advancing, with several suspects already in custody.
President Talon concluded by calling for national unity and vigilance, reaffirming that “the Beninese people’s attachment to democracy and the rule of law will never be shaken.”
