Senator Natasha Slams Global Platforms for Paying Nigerian Content Creators Peanuts

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has condemned the stark disparity in earnings between Nigerian content creators and their counterparts in developed countries on the same global social media platforms, describing it as “grossly unfair” and a threat to Nigeria’s burgeoning digital economy.

Speaking on Thursday during the second reading of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) Amendment Bill 2025, sponsored by Senator Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), Akpoti-Uduaghan highlighted how the inequity is stifling the financial potential of millions of young Nigerians who now rely on digital content creation as a legitimate career.

“Today, many of our youths have found real jobs and sustainable careers on social media,” she told the Senate.“

For example, when a content creator in the United States runs the same promotional video on Facebook, they earn between $10 and $30 for every 1,000 views.

In Nigeria, for the exact same video on the same platform, the creator is paid just 50 cents per 1,000 views,” she revealed.

The senator stressed that such discriminatory monetisation policies undermine financial inclusion and discourage investment in Nigeria’s fast-growing creator economy.

“I am speaking for the content creators because social media has become a critical source of income for our youths,” she said.

“We cannot allow global tech giants to exploit Nigerian talent while paying them peanuts.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan called on regulators and the financial sector to engage more aggressively with international platforms to ensure equitable revenue-sharing models, transparency in algorithms, and fair compensation for Nigerian creators.

The BOFIA Amendment Bill, which aims to strengthen oversight of systemically important financial institutions, was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions for further legislative work.

Lawmakers and digital economy stakeholders have welcomed the senator’s intervention, with many describing it as a timely push to protect and empower Nigeria’s youthful online workforce.
