Senate Steps Down Omoregie's Reappointment, Confirms Ngbea as FCSC Commissioner

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday deferred the reappointment of Idahagbon Williams Omoregie as a commissioner of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) following objections over alleged corruption, while confirming Ngbea Gabriel for the role.

During plenary, Cyril Fasuyi, chairman of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, presented the committee's report on the screening of the two nominees forwarded by President Bola Tinubu.

The nominees were Idahagbon Omoregie from Edo State, representing the South-South zone (Edo, Ekiti, and Ondo states) for a second term, and Ngbea Gabriel from Benue State, representing the North-Central zone (Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau states).

Adams Oshiomhole, senator representing Edo North and a former governor of Edo State, strongly opposed Omoregie's re-nomination.

Oshiomhole disclosed that he had personally nominated Omoregie five years earlier but cited serious concerns over the nominee's conduct during his first term.

"I had the privilege and honour of nominating him five years ago," Oshiomhole said. "But, with his conduct as a federal commissioner when it comes to recruitment and promotion, a lot of issues of corruption and other malpractices were raised."

He urged the Senate to defer Omoregie's confirmation, noting that a replacement from the same senatorial zone had already been proposed to maintain zonal balance.

Supporting the objection, Sani Musa, senator representing Niger East, argued that nominees lacking the support of their home-state senators should be stepped down.

Following the debate, the Senate voted to step down Omoregie's nomination. In contrast, Ngbea Gabriel's appointment sailed through, with the chamber approving him via voice vote after the Committee of the Whole endorsed the committee's favourable report.
