The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has assured Nigerians that electricity supply across the country will significantly improve within the next 24 to 48 hours, following a sharp decline caused by an explosion on the critical Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline (ELP).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NISO explained that the incident disrupted gas supply to several thermal power plants, leading to reduced generation capacity and widespread power shortages.
The operator is closely monitoring repair works being carried out by the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company (NGPTC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).
NISO has received assurances that the repairs on the affected pipeline are nearing completion, with full operations expected to resume shortly.
Once restored, gas flow to the impacted power stations will resume, enabling a gradual ramp-up in electricity generation and distribution nationwide.
The explosion occurred on December 10 near communities in Delta State, prompting immediate containment measures by NNPC, which successfully isolated the affected sections and conducted preliminary inspections.
Earlier reports from NNPC confirmed the breach but noted no immediate casualties, with investigations ongoing to determine the exact cause often linked to vandalism in the region.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has echoed the optimism, directing agencies to expedite efforts after stakeholder meetings confirmed the 24-48 hour timeline for gas supply restoration.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges with Nigeria's gas infrastructure, which supplies the majority of the nation's thermal power plants.
As repairs progress, Nigerians are urged to remain patient, with authorities emphasizing that the current shortfall is temporary and full stabilization is imminent.
