Police Withdrawal Sparks Lobbying by DSS Officers for VIP Escort Roles

Following President Bola Tinubu's directive to withdraw police officers from VIP security duties, some Department of State Services (DSS) officers have begun lobbying influential Nigerians to be deployed as their personal security details, investigations by Saturday PUNCH reveal.

The move comes after the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced the withdrawal of 11,566 personnel from VIP protection and their redeployment to core policing roles aimed at addressing rising crime in communities.

Sources indicate that DSS officers, viewing the vacancies as lucrative postings, have approached prominent individuals, urging them to request their deployment through state directors.

One VIP in Lagos disclosed that familiar DSS officers had met him multiple times, asking him to intervene with their superiors for reassignment as his guards, describing the roles as "juicy" opportunities.

While VIP protection falls within the DSS's statutory duties, some officers within the agency have cautioned against excessive desperation for such assignments.

The police withdrawal has also triggered a surge in demand for escorts from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and private security firms, as affected prominent Nigerians seek alternatives.
