Police Rescue 19 Abducted Passengers in Benue State

The Benue State Police Command has successfully rescued 19 passengers who were abducted by suspected armed bandits along the Ohimini–Otukpo Road in Ohimini Local Government Area.

The incident occurred in the early hours of December 22, 2025, when gunmen blocked two commercial vehicles at Mechanic Village on the Ohimini–Otukpo axis and forced the occupants into the surrounding bush.

According to police sources, the first vehicle, a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Oju to Ibadan, was carrying nine passengers when it was attacked around 2:00 a.m.

The second vehicle, a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Plateau Riders Company and driven by Igoche John from Jos, Plateau State, was en route from Jos to Bayelsa State with 11 passengers on board.

Upon receiving distress reports, the police rapidly deployed patrol teams and tactical units to the scene.

Officers conducted an intensive search of the surrounding bushes, creating overwhelming pressure that forced the bandits to abandon their victims and flee into the forest.

All 19 rescued passengers were found unhurt and no ransom was paid. They were debriefed by authorities before being allowed to continue their journeys.

However, one passenger, Boniface Ndukwe from Jos, Plateau State, remains unaccounted for and is believed to still be in captivity.

The Benue State Police Command has vowed to intensify efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects and secure the safe release of the remaining victim. Investigations are ongoing.
