The Edo State Police Command successfully rescued 11 passengers who were kidnapped by armed gunmen along the Benin-Lagos Expressway on the night of December 20, 2025.
Tragically, one bus driver succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.The attack took place around 11:55 p.m. near Isiuwa.
According to reports, the assailants first targeted an Audi vehicle loaded with plantains and carrying two passengers, opening fire on the driver.
The gunmen then ambushed a Toyota Hiace bus driven by Ubong Edet Okon, which was transporting 10 passengers from Lagos to Akwa Ibom.
The bandits forced the passengers into the surrounding bush.Police operatives responded swiftly to the scene, launching an immediate rescue operation that resulted in the safe recovery of 11 victims.

Authorities confirmed that two passengers remain unaccounted for. The injured bus driver was rushed to Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Ongoing bush-combing operations are underway to locate the missing victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
The incident highlights persistent security challenges on Nigeria's major highways, where armed groups continue to target travelers.
