Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested two men for allegedly possessing and distributing large quantities of prohibited fireworks and explosive devices, commonly known as “knockouts” and “bangers.”
The suspects, identified as Opara Evans, 35, and Chinedum Stanley, 29, were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation around Alaba and Relief Markets in Owerri metropolis.
Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying substantial quantities of the banned items were recovered from the suspects.
“The Imo State Police Command wishes to reiterate the total ban on the sale, distribution, possession, and use of all forms of fireworks, knockouts, bangers, and other explosive devices across the 27 local government areas of the state,” Okoye stated.
He warned that anyone caught violating the ban will be promptly arrested and prosecuted, urging parents, traders, and residents to completely desist from handling the prohibited items.
The command called on the public to report any suspicious movement or sale of such items to the nearest police station, assuring that all information will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
"The Imo State Police Command remains fully committed to ensuring a peaceful, safe, and hitch-free festive season for all residents,” the statement added.
The arrests come amid heightened enforcement of the statewide ban on fireworks ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, with similar directives already issued in Enugu, Kaduna, Ebonyi, andYobe states.
