The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to immediately commence legal action to vacate the seats of the Martin Amaewhule-led members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who, for the second time in two years, announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a scathing press statement issued Saturday and signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP described Wednesday’s formal declaration on the floor of the House as political farce.
“We have seen on various media platforms news of the redefection of some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who, for a second time, announced their defection from our party. We recall that they had done so earlier and later recanted. These are people whom the world is aware are doing the bidding of their paymaster and demigod,” the statement read.
The party labelled the lawmakers “political puppets” and “enemies of democracy” who have turned the Rivers legislature into a mockery.“The easiest way to describe their action is a defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the APC,” the PDP said, insisting that the lawmakers elected on its platform in 2023 cannot retain their seats after openly switching allegiance.
The PDP said it will activate Section 109 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to recover all the mandates, vowing not to allow “political jobbers” to hold on to seats won under its banner.
The party urged its members in Rivers State to remain calm and resolute, assuring them that efforts are ongoing to rebuild the state chapter on the principles of inclusiveness, fairness and equity.
The latest development comes just days after the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee of the PDP reaffirmed the expulsion of former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, alongside ten others at the party’s stormy November 2025 National Convention in Ibadan.
A disclaimer signed by the National Chairman warned the public that Wike and the expelled members no longer speak for or represent the PDP in any capacity.
