Northern CAN Commends Governor Fintiri for Pardoning Sunday Jackson

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory has praised Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for granting a state pardon to Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer previously sentenced to death.

Jackson, who claimed self-defence after killing an attacker on his farm, was among three inmates granted full pardon by the governor on Tuesday, while the sentences of five others were fully remitted.

The gesture was part of activities marking the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The pardon followed recommendations from the Adamawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, citing Jackson's significant improvement in behaviour and conduct during incarceration.

Jackson's case had drawn widespread attention and criticism, with advocates arguing that his 2021 death sentence upheld on appeal in 2022 for killing a herder who allegedly attacked him represented a miscarriage of justice.

The incident stemmed from a confrontation in Kodomti Village, Numan Local Government Area.Northern CAN described the governor's decision as a restoration of justice and a boost to public confidence, hailing it as a compassionate act in the spirit of the festive season.

The development has sparked celebrations across Adamawa, particularly among farming communities and Christian groups, who view it as an affirmation of the right to self-defence.
