Nigeria's Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced the restoration of normal traffic on the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway following a major disruption caused by a blockade over the weekend.
The gridlock stemmed from a standoff between truck drivers and military personnel, reportedly triggered by an incident in which a truck's windscreen was smashed.
In protest, truck drivers blocked a section of the highway, leading to severe congestion and stranding thousands of travelers heading south during the busy Christmas period.
In a swift response, Minister Umahi ordered the immediate opening of completed sections of the ongoing expressway rehabilitation and mobilized resources to clear the blockage.
The measures were implemented on Sunday, December 21, with full traffic flow restored around 2:00 a.m. on Monday.
The Federal Controller of Works in Kogi State, Engr. Patiko Isah, confirmed that field teams, working alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies, successfully decongested the corridor.
Umahi urged motorists to drive cautiously and patiently amid heightened holiday traffic, while reaffirming the federal government's commitment to safe and efficient roads across the country.
He also extended festive greetings, wishing Nigerians a peaceful and joyous celebration.
