Labour unions and civil society activists, including Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and revolutionary activist Omoyele Sowore, have begun assembling at the NLC Secretariat in Abuja for a nationwide protest decrying the escalating insecurity plaguing the country.
The demonstration, organised by the NLC and supported by allies such as Sowore's Revolution Now Movement, aims to highlight the government's perceived failure to curb rampant kidnappings, banditry, and killings that have affected workers, investors, and ordinary citizens alike.
Heavy security presence, including personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Department of State Services (DSS), has been deployed around the protest site to maintain order.
The protest follows weeks of mobilisation by the NLC, which declared the action earlier this month in response to persistent security challenges.
NLC leaders have emphasised that the event is not politically motivated but a call for urgent, decisive government intervention.Ajaero has previously stated that insecurity is severely impacting the economy, deterring investments, and leaving workers vulnerable, many of whom have been kidnapped or lost family members without adequate protection or support.
Despite a closed-door meeting between President Bola Tinubu and labour leaders on December 16 in an apparent bid to avert the action, the NLC proceeded with the protest as planned.
Protests are expected to spread to other cities across Nigeria, with participants demanding stronger measures to restore safety and hold authorities accountable.
