Nationwide protest: NLC to consult organs after meeting with Tinubu

The Nigeria Labour Congress said it will brief its organs before deciding on its planned protest after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said this in an interview after the meeting which lasted barely an hour.

“We came for consultation with the President, and we are finished, so we have to go back to our meeting and then continue tomorrow. By tomorrow, we will get the outcome,” he stated.

Asked if the planned protest would still hold, he added, “If I’m insisting or I’m not insisting, I will communicate to you.

“It (the NLC) is not an organisation that one person rules. We’ll go back to the drawing board and digest all that Mr President said to us, and move forward from there.”

Ajaero said the NLC’s National Executive Council and state councils would weigh the President’s assurances before a final position is announced later on Wednesday.

“We’ll go back to the drawing board,” he noted, insisting that the union’s decision must reflect collective input.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who attended the talks, said dialogue was ongoing.

“Consultation is going on. We were dialoguing. At the end of the day, you will know what you are supposed to know and what you want to know,” Uzodimma said.

Pressed on what Nigerians should expect, Uzodimma replied, “Of course, we are here to serve the country, both the labour, the government and the governed. We are all working service to the nation.”

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Labour, Mrs Nkiruka Onyejeocha, said NLC leaders and citizens who are also members of NLC requested to see the President and did.

She said, “They are happy they’ve seen Mr President, and they’ve firsthand that at least the President has driven the economy out of the woods, so it’s very good news.”

Tuesday’s meeting comes amid Labour’s consultations over a nationwide strike on economic hardship and wage-related demands.

The Presidency and the Governors’ Forum have recently stepped up engagement with union leaders, urging dialogue over protests and an eventual strike.
