Nine people have been confirmed dead and five others injured in a horrific road crash involving a speeding trailer and a Sharon minibus on the Kaltungo-Cham Road in Kaluwa community, Kaltungo Local Government Area.
The accident occurred around 8:33 a.m. on Monday, December 22, when the trailer, travelling on a sloping section of the road, lost control due to excessive speed and brake failure.
It rammed into the minibus from behind, causing the smaller vehicle to somersault multiple times.
The Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samson Kaura, confirmed the incident, stating that 18 people were involved in total.
Four passengers escaped unharmed, while the injured were rushed to the General Hospital in Kaltungo for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital's mortuary.Preliminary investigations point to overspeeding and mechanical failure as the primary causes.
The FRSC has renewed calls for drivers to maintain vehicles properly and adhere to speed limits, especially on hilly routes during the festive season.
This tragedy adds to Nigeria's alarming road safety record, with heavy vehicles frequently involved in fatal crashes due to poor maintenance and reckless driving.
Authorities urge heightened caution as holiday travel peaks.
