Nigeria to Launch Biometric Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) in 2026

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) plans to introduce a new biometric-based Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) early in 2026, replacing the current Single Travel Emergency Certificate (STEC).

Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap announced the innovation during a ceremony in Abuja on Monday, where she decorated 46 newly promoted Assistant Comptrollers of Immigration to full Comptrollers.

Nandap highlighted ongoing reforms, including contactless solutions, enhanced visa and passport production, and the recently launched ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), aimed at making processes seamless.

She described STEP as a biometric emergency travel document to improve efficiency and security for Nigerians in urgent situations abroad.

The CG charged the new comptrollers to exhibit heightened vigilance, professionalism, and leadership amid national security challenges, emphasizing that promotion is earned through dedication and integrity.

Nandap praised President Bola Tinubu for his support of institutional reforms and Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for strategic oversight.

She reaffirmed zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct and encouraged officers awaiting promotion to remain committed.

The announcement signals NIS's push toward technological advancements in migration management and border security.
