President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday announced that Nigeria will soon commence aircraft component manufacturing as part of a strategic push to establish the country as the aviation hub for West and Central Africa.
Represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the inaugural Nigerian International Airshow, the President projected that aviation sector revenue will reach $2.58 billion by 2029, with passenger traffic rising from 15.89 million in 2023 to 25.7 million.
He described the airshow as a historic milestone that places Nigeria alongside global giants like Farnborough, Paris, and Dubai.
Tinubu highlighted massive infrastructure investments, including N712 billion for the upgrade of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, ongoing renovations at six major airports, and runway improvements nationwide.
Nigeria now leads Africa in compliance with international aviation standards, with its Cape Town Convention score rising from 49.5% to 75.5%, enabling cheaper aircraft financing.
The President also revealed new partnerships with Boeing and Cranfield University to establish advanced Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, aimed at ending the annual $200 million capital flight on overseas aircraft maintenance.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, hailed the airshow as a bold declaration of Nigeria’s readiness to lead and compete globally in aviation.
