Nigeria, India Deepen Military Ties as Indian Defence Adviser Meets COAS in Abuja

The longstanding defence partnership between Nigeria and India recorded fresh momentum on Tuesday, 9 December 2025, when the Indian Defence Adviser to Nigeria, Colonel Manoj Kumar Singh, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, NAM, at Army Headquarters, Abuja.

During the visit, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral military cooperation in areas of training, counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, technical assistance, and defence industry collaboration.

Colonel Singh praised the Nigerian Army’s professionalism and sacrifices in combating insurgency, banditry, and other security threats, while expressing India’s readiness to increase slots for Nigerian officers in Indian military institutions and deepen collaboration in defence technology and equipment maintenance.

In his response, Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu described India as a reliable and time-tested partner, highlighting the significant impact of Indian training programmes on the operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army over the decades.

The COAS called for intensified joint efforts in emerging security domains, including cybersecurity, unmanned systems, and counter-IED technology, to meet contemporary threats.

The visit ended on a warm note with the exchange of souvenirs, the signing of the visitors’ book by Colonel Singh, and a group photograph, further cementing the bonds of friendship between the armed forces of both countries.
