The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that one of its Lockheed C-130H Hercules transport aircraft, en route to Portugal on a ferry mission, carried out a safe precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, on 8 December 2025 after the crew detected a technical issue shortly after departing Lagos.
In an official statement released today, the NAF emphasized that the diversion was executed strictly in line with international aviation safety protocols, choosing the nearest suitable airfield to ensure the safety of the crew and aircraft.
“The crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield,” the statement read.
All crew members are reported safe and have received courteous assistance from Burkinabe authorities.
The aircraft was being ferried to Portugal, believed to be for scheduled heavy maintenance or upgrades, a routine procedure for the NAF’s aging C-130 fleet.
Technical teams are already assessing the aircraft, and the mission is expected to resume as soon as the issue is resolved.
The Nigerian Air Force praised the hospitality shown by Burkina Faso’s authorities and reiterated its unwavering commitment to safety and operational standards.
This incident occurs against the backdrop of the NAF’s ongoing efforts to modernize and sustain its airlift capability, with the C-130 Hercules remaining the backbone of its strategic transport fleet despite decades of intensive service across domestic and international operations.
No further details on the exact nature of the technical issue have been disclosed, as is standard in ongoing safety investigations.
