Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has disclosed that her late husband, Muhammadu Buhari, momentarily fell for gossip circulating in the Presidential Villa that she intended to poison him, leading him to lock his bedroom door and disrupt his daily routines.
The revelation is contained in a newly unveiled 600-page biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr. Charles Omole.
The book was launched at the State House in Abuja on Monday, attended by President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries.
Mrs. Buhari attributes her husband's severe health crisis in 2017 which necessitated a 154-day medical leave in the UK not to poisoning or a mysterious illness, as speculated at the time, but to a breakdown in his carefully managed nutrition and meal schedule, which she had personally overseen for years with tailored diets and supplements.
“They said I wanted to kill him,” she is quoted in the book. “My husband believed them for a week or so.”
"During that period, the late president began locking his room, altered minor habits, and critically, allowed meals to be delayed or skipped entirely, while stopping his supplements. “For a year, he did not have lunch. They mismanaged his meals,” she added.
She noted that proper supplementation resumed in London, enabling a rapid recovery Buhari reportedly discarded his walking stick just three days after arrival.
The biography also touches on palace intrigue, including allegations of surveillance and the debunked "Jibril from Sudan" body double conspiracy theory that gained traction during his prolonged absences.
Spanning 22 chapters, the book chronicles Buhari's journey from his early life in Daura, Katsina State, through his military and political career, to his death in a London hospital on July 13, 2025, at age 82.
At the launch, President Tinubu praised Buhari's integrity and discipline, urging Nigerians to emulate his legacy of viewing public office as a trust rather than personal gain.
