President Bola Tinubu on Monday disclosed how he built a coalition with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Tinubu said the coalition he built with the late Buhari led
to the removal of a former President.
Buhari, Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress had worked
against the reelection of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
Jonathan, who did just one term in office, lost the
presidential election to Buhari and this was attributed to Tinubu’s influence
then.
However, Tinubu, while recounting his political sojourn with
Buhari, said his predecessor left behind a reputation of integrity.
Tinubu spoke during the launch of Buhari’s official
biography “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari” at the
Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Tinubu: “President Muhammadu Buhari left behind
a reputation for integrity, a spartan lifestyle, and the belief that public
office is a trust and not a windfall.
“Together, we built a broad coalition, campaigned across the
country, and proved that Nigeria could chart a new course.
“Our movement united diverse interests and achieved a
historic victory in 2015 by unseating an incumbent president, thus reshaping
Nigeria’s political landscape.”
The president also noted the growth of their political
alliance and the APC, saying, “The coalition we built in 2014 is now the
fastest-growing political party in Africa today. Its growth continues.”
Tinubu outlined key pillars of Buhari’s legacy to include
humility, security, vision, and social justice.
“President Buhari preferred simplicity over ornamentation.
“He believed that a leader must first discipline himself
before he can discipline a system,” Tinubu said.
On security, he added, “He invested in platforms and
personnel, improved capacities across our armed services, and pushed for
reforms that endured beyond the headlines.”
