Mechanics Protest at Lagos Assembly Over Alleged Harassment, Eviction Threats

Hundreds of artisans and mechanics from the Egbeda-Idimu Mechanic Village in Alimosho Local Government Area stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly on December 23, 2025, to protest ongoing harassment and attempts to evict them from their workplaces.

The protesters, operating under the Egbeda–Idimu Community Development Association (CDA), accused the CDA chairman of repeatedly mobilizing hoodlums to chase them away, severely disrupting their livelihoods.

They brandished court documents asserting legal ownership of the land and appealed to lawmakers and the state government to intervene urgently to protect their rights and allow uninterrupted operations.

A spokesman for the mechanics alleged that the chairman's actions have led to frequent disruptions, with workers often unable to access their workshops.

"This land belongs to us legally; we have judgments to prove it. We just want to work in peace and feed our families," one protester told journalists.

In response, the CDA chairman denied orchestrating harassment, insisting the site is unsuitable for mechanic activities as it lies directly under high-tension power lines and along a petroleum pipeline right-of-way, posing serious safety risks.

He further accused some mechanics of illegally subdividing and selling portions of the land for residential development, in violation of its designated purpose.

The protest highlights longstanding land disputes in the area, with safety concerns clashing against the economic needs of low-income artisans who have operated the village for years.

Lawmakers received the protesters' petition and promised to investigate the matter, urging all parties to maintain peace pending resolution.

Authorities are yet to announce specific intervention measures, as tensions remain high in the community.
