Fire Razes Over 20 Shops at Terminus Market in Jos

A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed more than 20 makeshift shops at the Yankwalli section of the popular Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State, razing goods and property worth millions of naira.

The inferno, which started around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, rapidly engulfed the cluster of temporary structures, leaving traders devastated.

As of the time of this report, smouldering remnants continued to burn, with efforts ongoing to fully extinguish the blaze.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as flames spread quickly through the densely packed shops.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are yet to conduct an official investigation.

Affected traders and onlookers praised the prompt response of the Plateau State Fire Service and security operatives, whose swift intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent areas and minimising further losses.

No casualties have been reported, but the incident has dealt a severe blow to the livelihoods of small-scale traders who depend on the market for daily income.

Many victims expressed distress over the total destruction of their merchandise and called for government assistance to aid recovery.

Fire outbreaks remain a recurring challenge in Nigerian markets, often exacerbated by congested layouts, makeshift structures, and limited access to firefighting resources.

Investigations are expected to determine the cause and guide preventive measures.
