Some travellers plying the Gurusu-Gwashi road in Bukkuyum LGA of Zamfara state have been severely injured, after an improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly planted by bandits, exploded on Wednesday.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-terrorism
publication, the explosion affected many passengers who were travelling in a
Toyota Eagle Eye vehicle.
The publication said the device detonated around 08:32am,
throwing the vehicle off balance and triggering panic among commuters.
The passengers were said to be travelling from Gwashi when
the incident occurred.
Troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, backed by tactical units
and bomb disposal experts, were immediately deployed to secure the area and
assess the extent of the damage.
The counter-terrorism organisation reported that efforts to
determine the exact number of casualties were ongoing, as troops continued
recovery operations and searched for remnants of the explosive.
The attack is suspected to have been coordinated by a bandit
kingpin identified as Sadiku, who is believed to be working with the Dogo Gide
faction.
Authorities have advised travellers to exercise caution and
avoid isolated routes as security operations intensify in the area.
Yazid Abubakar, public relations officer of the Zamfara
police command, was not immediately available for a reaction to this story.
