The Imo state government has demolished Jessy Best Hotel and Ugwudi Cottage Hospital’s mortuary along Owerri-Aba road in Ngor Okpala LGA, over alleged organ harvesting.
The state had sealed the morgue after discovering decomposed
and mutilated corpses in unhygienic conditions, raising suspicions of illegal
organ harvesting activities.
Aboki Danjuma, state commissioner of police, told
journalists that the demolitions were carried out on the orders of Hope
Uzodimma, governor of the state.
Danjuma said the owner of the property, Stanley Oparaugo,
popularly known as ‘Morocco’, is now wanted after ignoring multiple police
invitations.
He said intelligence reports showed the properties were hubs
for criminal activity.
“The mortuary was suspected to be a site for organ
harvesting, as many of the bodies recovered were mutilated,” he said.
“Oparaugo can run, but he cannot hide for long. The law will
catch up with him.”
The CP also urged residents to provide information that
could lead to the suspect’s arrest and assured travelers on the Owerri-Aba
expressway of “safe trips and tight security” during the yuletide season.
The enforcement operation also had two luxury homes, a
bungalow and a duplex, and a smaller apartment in the Ngor community
demolished.
These properties were allegedly used as a shrine, with
fetish items discovered and burnt during the demolition.
