Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has strongly denounced the assault on women protesters by suspected hoodlums outside the state Government House, directing police to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
A viral video captured the disturbing incident over the weekend, showing thugs attacking female demonstrators near the gate of the under-construction Government House.
The women were reportedly protesting escalating kidnappings and banditry plaguing rural communities in the state. In a statement posted on his official X account on Monday, the governor expressed outrage: "I am enraged at footage showing some hoodlums attacking women protesters, Peaceful protest is a democratic right. Assault on protesters is unacceptable, and that should never have happened."
He emphasized that the protesters were exercising their constitutional rights and affirmed his administration's commitment to democracy and order over the past six years.
"I, therefore, distance myself from the incident as it does not represent our views as a government," AbdulRazaq said, adding that he has instructed the police to "fish out the attackers and bring them to account."
The governor also highlighted ongoing efforts to combat insecurity, noting that he personally presided over the passing-out parade of armed forest guards on Saturday, December 27.
These locally recruited guards are tasked with flushing out kidnappers and terrorists from Kwara's forests as part of broader security investments.
"We are launching an offensive on the criminals," he stated, calling for public understanding and support in the fight against banditry and terrorism.
Critics, including activist Omoyele Sowore, have slammed the incident, accusing authorities of permitting or sanctioning the violence while police allegedly stood by without intervening.
