A group of youths in Kebbi State took to the streets on Saturday in a peaceful protest, urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.
The demonstrators, expressing solidarity with the ex-minister, gathered in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, highlighting what they described as an unjust prolonged detention amid an ongoing EFCC investigation into allegations of financial misconduct during Malami's tenure.
Malami, a prominent figure from Kebbi State who served under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has been in EFCC custody since early December after reportedly failing to meet administrative bail conditions.
The probe reportedly involves issues related to recovered Abacha loot, abuse of office, and other financial matters. Malami and his supporters have maintained that the investigation is politically motivated, particularly following his recent political activities and defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The protest comes amid heightened tensions, with Malami's camp accusing the EFCC of bias and calling for the agency's chairman to recuse himself.
A court recently upheld Malami's detention, dismissing his bail application.Supporters argue that the former AGF should either be charged in court or released, emphasizing constitutional rights against unlawful detention.
The EFCC has denied claims of political persecution, insisting its actions are guided strictly by law.
