The Nigeria Labour Congress, Sokoto State chapter, has suspended its planned street protest over worsening insecurity and resolved to hold special prayers for peace and safety across the state.
The decision was announced on Wednesday by the state NLC Chairman, Abdullahi Jungle.
Jungle said the move followed extensive consultations and a resolution of the State Executive Council, in line with the directive of the NLC national headquarters.
The NLC had earlier indicated readiness to join a nationwide protest called by organised labour to draw attention to the escalating insecurity across the country, particularly in the North-West, where banditry, kidnappings and attacks on rural communities have continued unabated.
In Sokoto State, several local government areas, including Sabon Birni, Isa, Rabah, Tangaza and Gada, have recorded repeated attacks, leading to loss of lives, displacement of residents and disruption of economic activities, especially farming and trading.
Neighbouring Zamfara State has also remained one of the worst-hit by banditry.
Jungle acknowledged that insecurity has continued to take a heavy toll on Sokoto and other parts of the region.
“There is no doubt that insecurity affects us more in this part of the country, as many of our local governments are currently facing serious security challenges,” he said.
While commending security agencies in the state for what he described as “recent victories and visible efforts,” the labour leader stressed that the situation still requires urgent and sustained intervention.
“In spite of the efforts by our security agencies, which we acknowledge and appreciate, we believe this is a moment for collective reflection and divine intervention,” Jungle added.
He explained that the NLC, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Action Committee and other stakeholders, unanimously agreed that special prayers were necessary, in line with the long-standing religious and cultural tradition of the people of Sokoto during periods of crisis.
“We have resolved at the SEC level to focus on the path of God. The Sokoto people are known for resorting to prayers whenever such situations arise.
“That is why we have engaged respected Islamic clerics (Ulama’a) to offer special prayers for peace and security in our land,” he said.
Jungle also renewed calls on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity in Sokoto and neighbouring states, urging authorities to provide adequate support to security agencies.
“We call on the Federal Government to give full support to the security agencies—whatever they need to end this menace should be provided without delay. Our people are being killed, and this must stop,” he said.
He emphasised that the decision to suspend street protests does not signal a retreat from labour’s advocacy for improved security and accountability but represents a strategic, peaceful and culturally grounded response to the current security situation.
Special prayer sessions were held at the NLC secretariat, with Islamic scholars, labour leaders and community members in attendance.
