The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has charged Police Public Relations Officers (PPROs) nationwide to adopt more aggressive and proactive measures in combating fake news and misinformation targeting the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Annual Conference of Police Public Relations Officers in Abuja, the IGP described the deliberate spread of recycled old videos, doctored images, and false narratives as a “dangerous weapon” being used to erode public confidence in the police and undermine ongoing security operations.
“Misinformation spreads faster than truth in today’s digital age. A single manipulated video can incite unrest and damage years of trust-building efforts,” he warned.
IGP Egbetokun directed all PPROs to establish rapid-response mechanisms, strengthen fact-checking units, and issue timely rebuttals before false stories gain traction.
He equally urged them to transform police social media handles into credible platforms for real-time updates, transparency, and direct engagement with citizens.
While acknowledging public concerns over issues such as alleged extortion and operational challenges, the police boss stressed that effective, truthful, and professional communication remains the strongest tool for bridging the gap between the Force and the people it serves.
He commended PPROs for their role as the “voice and face” of the Nigeria Police and promised continuous training and resources to enhance their capacity in the evolving information battlefield.
