“I was paid N100,000 to bomb worshippers", says Maiduguri suicide bomber

A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber, Ibrahim Mohammed, arrested in Yobe State, has confessed to receiving up to ₦100,000 per mission to carry out deadly attacks, including the December 24 bombing at Gamboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri that killed five worshippers and injured 32 others.

Ibrahim, from Michika in Adamawa State, was captured on December 29, 2025, in Damaturu by local hunters collaborating with troops of Operation Hadin Kai during a raid on a suspected terrorist hideout.

During interrogation, the suspect revealed he was deployed alongside another operative by Boko Haram commanders Adamu and Abubakar, operating from areas between Adamawa and the Mandara Mountains.

“We were sent to plant two IEDs in the Izala Mosque at Gamboru Market,” Ibrahim said. The pair entered the mosque after Zuhr and Asr prayers when it was empty, pretending to pray while digging holes to bury the devices one in the centre and one at the side.

The explosives were pre-timed to detonate five minutes after the start of Maghrib prayers. “As faithful gathered for Maghrib, shortly after the first raka’at, the bomb went off. I ran towards the market area,” he recounted.

In a chilling admission, Ibrahim returned to the scene posing as a helper: “I assisted in evacuating corpses and injured victims into emergency vehicles.”

The suspect described suicide bombings as a paid job within the terror group, earning between ₦70,000 and ₦100,000 per operation. Despite this, he expressed remorse: “I regret killing innocent people who committed no crime.”

Security sources link Ibrahim to a broader coordinated campaign by JAS (Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad), Ansaru, and JNIM elements to launch multiple suicide bombings and IED attacks across the North-East.

A notorious IED expert, Munzir Abu Ziyadah, allegedly prepared up to 10 person-borne IEDs at the Ali Ngulde camp for such missions.

After the Maiduguri attack, Ibrahim moved to Yobe for reconnaissance on military positions and hunters’ groups ahead of planned strikes on new recruits.

He also disclosed that additional suicide bombers had been sent to Damaturu targeting mosques and markets.

His arrest followed suspicions over his unusual presence among a group of Almajirai. Investigations are ongoing as security forces intensify efforts to disrupt the terror network's festive-season offensive.
