Holiday Travellers Stranded in Massive Gridlock on Lokoja-Abuja Highway

Thousands of holiday travellers heading home for Christmas have been trapped in severe gridlock along the busy Lokoja-Abuja highway, with traffic snarls persisting for the third consecutive day.

Motorists interviewed by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) described harrowing experiences, with many stuck for over 12 hours without significant movement. One driver, travelling to Enugu with his family, lamented: "It is now 8 p.m., and I have been here since 7 a.m. with no end in sight."

The worst congestion has been reported around Koton Karfe, where reports attribute the chaos primarily to two trucks that overturned and blocked portions of the roadway.

The gridlock comes at a peak travel period just days before Christmas, exacerbating frustrations for Nigerians returning to their hometowns for the festivities.

Authorities are yet to provide an estimated time for the road to fully reopen.
