Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has lavished praise on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi, for securing Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval of ₦47 billion to complete the long-stalled Jakara-Wuju-Wuju road and sewage project in Kano metropolis.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, following the 35th State Executive Council meeting, Governor Yusuf described the federal intervention as a testament to President Tinubu's "responsive leadership and unwavering commitment to infrastructural development across Nigeria, especially in Kano State."
The multipurpose project, originally flagged off in 2013 by then-Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was abandoned during the subsequent administration.
Upon assuming office, the Yusuf government conducted a thorough assessment and formally requested federal support to revive it through a public-private partnership model.
"The request was promptly approved by the Federal Executive Council, enabling us to finally deliver this critical infrastructure to our people," Yusuf said.
The governor reserved special commendation for Honourable Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi, the federal lawmaker representing Bichi Federal Constituency, for his "tireless advocacy, consistency, and relentless follow-up" from the National Assembly through to the Presidency.
Yusuf hailed Bichi as a "worthy ambassador" of Kano State, urging other federal legislators from the state to emulate his dedication and patriotism, transcending party lines.
Yusuf also acknowledged Bichi's instrumental role in securing approvals for other landmark projects, including the ongoing International Conference Centre along Maiduguri Road and a proposed international-standard stadium in Bichi town.
Spanning Gwale, Kano Municipal, Dala, and Fagge Local Government Areas, the ₦47 billion project is designed to combat erosion, upgrade sewage systems, enhance urban drainage, and stimulate economic activity in the densely populated metropolis.
The state government has already completed 850 metres of the work, while the federal funding will cover the remaining 6.7 kilometres.
Governor Yusuf renewed his appeal to President Tinubu to approve additional major infrastructure projects in Kano, Nigeria's most populous state, and reiterated his administration's readiness to collaborate with the federal government for sustainable development.
Construction activities have resumed in earnest, following the recent flag-off by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, who reaffirmed the Tinubu administration's commitment to seeing the project through to completion.
Residents of the affected communities have expressed delight over the development, noting that the project will significantly alleviate perennial flooding and improve living conditions in the ancient city.
