FCCPC Shuts Down Ikeja Electric Offices for Violating Consumer Rights

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken decisive action against Ikeja Electric, sealing its facilities for persistent violations of customer rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) of 2018.

The enforcement comes after months of unsuccessful attempts to resolve the issue through dialogue and warnings.

FCCPC's Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Bola Adeyinka, emphasized the measured approach: “Sealing this facility is a proportionate enforcement measure taken only after repeated engagement and several opportunities for voluntary compliance".

At the heart of the dispute is Ikeja Electric's refusal to implement a Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) ruling that required the utility to unbundle a single Maximum Demand account into 20 separate non-Maximum Demand accounts.

This adjustment would have acknowledged 19 residential units and one service point as distinct customers, enabling individual metering and electricity connections.

The affected customer, who has dutifully paid all required fees and met obligations, has been left in the dark literally for more than two and a half years.

This prolonged disconnection has rendered the residential units uninhabitable and unusable, highlighting a severe breach of service reliability and access rights.

FCCPC's interventions began in earnest with an April 2025 directive outlining clear compliance steps and deadlines. Despite this, Ikeja Electric failed to act.

A follow-up Compliance Notice issued on October 2, 2025, demanded full resolution within seven business days, but the company remained unresponsive.

The seals on Ikeja Electric's premises will stay in place until the utility fully adheres to both NERC and FCCPC directives, backed by documented proof of compliance.

As of this report, Ikeja Electric has not issued any public statement regarding the matter.
