The Delta State Police Command on Friday carried out a massive raid on dealers and warehouses stocking fireworks and knock-out bangers, recovering goods estimated at several millions of naira.
Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the operation in a statement, stressing that the statewide ban on the sale and use of fireworks remains fully in force ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“Some may ask if this is the problem of the state. Yes, it is part of a proactive strategy to prevent crime,” Edafe said.
“Experience has shown that the reckless use of knock-outs and fireworks often provides cover for criminals to operate during the festive period.”
He warned that anyone caught selling, buying or setting off fireworks will have their goods confiscated and still face prosecution in court.
“It is better to take this advice now. If you are caught, you will lose your goods and still be prosecuted,” the police spokesman declared.
The command says the enforcement will continue throughout the yuletide season to ensure a crime-free celebration across Delta State.
