Customs Seizes 20 Diverted Containers Worth ₦769.5 Million in Kano-Jigawa Axis

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 20 diverted transit containers with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦769.5 million in the Kano-Jigawa axis, as part of ongoing efforts to combat cargo diversion and protect national revenue.

Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi announced the seizures during a press briefing in Kano, noting that the operations took place between the second and fourth quarters of 2025 through intelligence-driven enforcement.

The containers, originally destined for inland terminals and free trade zones, were illegally rerouted to private warehouses and markets, violating the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.

Items recovered include vitrified tiles unlawfully diverted from the Kano Free Trade Zone (DPV ₦228.6 million), diesel engine oil, polyester materials, used clothing, printed and lace fabrics, medical consumables, and Zamzam bottled water some of which are prohibited under the Common External Tariff regulations.

Adeniyi described cargo diversion as a "grave offence" that undermines government revenue, national security, and Nigeria's international trade reputation.

He vowed that the NCS would deploy all lawful measures to detect, deter, and punish offenders.

One container remains under detention pending legal proceedings, while two containing medical consumables were forfeited to the Federal Government following a Federal High Court judgment in Kano on December 10, 2025.

The CGC urged importers, clearing agents, and logistics operators to strictly adhere to transit procedures and report suspicious activities to the nearest Customs office, reaffirming the Service's commitment to facilitating legitimate trade while cracking down on economic sabotage.
