Chimamanda Adichie has denied taking any visiting professorship role at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
Earlier, the UNN had stated that it appointed the author,
alongside Kevin Urama of the African Development Bank, as a visiting professor.
It stated that the appointments were conveyed in separate
letters dated December 18 and signed by the vice-chancellor, Simon Ortuanya.
An Adichie appointment, the university’s acting PRO had
added, would enrich teaching and scholarship in the arts and humanities through
lectures, academic engagements, and mentorship of students and young scholars.
But, in a turn of events, Adichie has denied taking any such
appointment or receiving any letter from the UNN dated December 18.
Omawumi Ogbe, Adiche’s media aide, stated on Wednesday that
the acclaimed writer has dismissed the purported appointment as “false.”
“It has come to our attention that several news outlets are
reporting that Ms. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been appointed as a Visiting
Professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and we wish to state
categorically that this information is entirely false,” Ogbe said.
“Ms. Adichie has not received any such appointment, nor has
she been in communication with the university regarding a professorship.
“The reports claiming that official letters were signed and
dated December 18, 2025, are inaccurate.”
Adiche, although admitting to holding the institution in
high esteem, said she was never in talks with UNN regarding professorship.
