Several worshippers were killed on Tuesday when an explosive device went off inside a mosque at Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The explosion occurred while worshippers were observing
prayers, triggering panic and confusion within the densely populated market
area.
Eyewitnesses told Zagazola Malala that the blast ripped
through part of the mosque, killing some worshippers instantly and leaving
others with varying degrees of injuries.
Traders and residents fled the scene as thick smoke billowed
from the mosque, while some people attempted to rescue victims before the
arrival of emergency responders.
Security operatives swiftly cordoned off the area to prevent
further casualties and to enable a preliminary assessment of the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not
officially confirmed the number of casualties, while investigations into the
cause of the explosion were ongoing.
