The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday, 11 December 2025, paid a courtesy call on the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu I, at the Iga Iduganran Palace.
During the visit, the COAS expressed deep gratitude to the foremost monarch and the Lagos Council of Obas for their unwavering support to the Nigerian Army over the years.
Lt-Gen Shaibu emphasised that the visit was to personally thank the royal father, seek his continued blessings, and reaffirm the Army’s respect for Nigeria’s rich customs and traditions.
He particularly praised Oba Akiolu for the fatherly guidance and goodwill consistently extended to Army units, formations, and institutions across Lagos State, describing such traditional backing as “invaluable” to operational success and civil-military relations.
In his royal response, Oba Rilwan Akiolu commended the Nigerian Army for its sacrifices and professionalism in defending the territorial integrity and internal security of the nation.
He described the Army as “the strongest pillar upholding the Nigerian State” and lauded Lt-Gen Shaibu’s purposeful leadership since assuming office as the 25th indigenous Chief of Army Staff.
The monarch thereafter offered special prayers for lasting peace and stability in Nigeria, divine protection for troops in various theatres of operation, and a successful tenure for the COAS.
The courtesy visit further strengthened the long-standing cordial relationship between the Nigerian Army and the Lagos traditional institution.
