The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has declared an all-out nationwide crackdown on unregistered Point of Sale (POS) operators, warning that any agent found operating without proper CAC registration will be shut down and their terminals seized starting January 1, 2026.
In a strongly worded public notice issued today, the commission accused thousands of POS operators of flagrantly violating the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and Central Bank of Nigeria Agent Banking guidelines often with the active backing of some fintech companies.
“The reckless proliferation of unregistered PoS operators has become a clear danger to Nigeria’s financial system and the hard-earned money of citizens.
This illegality ends on 31 December 2025,” the statement signed by CAC Management read.
Key highlights of the directive:
From January 1, 2026, no POS operator will be allowed to function without valid CAC registration
Security agencies have been directed to enforce compliance nationwide
Unregistered terminals will be confiscated on sight
Fintech companies found aiding unregistered agents will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the CBN for sanctions
The CAC urged all POS agents – including individuals, businesses, and mobile money operators to immediately regularize their status, stressing that “compliance is not optional; it is the law.”
Industry sources say the move is aimed at curbing fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion in the booming cash-agent ecosystem that exploded after the 2023 cash scarcity crisis.
POS operators now have less than four weeks to complete their CAC registration or risk losing their livelihood overnight.
