Grammy-winning Nigerian artiste Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy, joined forces with outspoken social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly called VeryDarkMan, for a visit to the Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Lagos.
The purpose of the courtesy call, as confirmed by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Lagos State Command, was to gain direct insights into the legal and administrative protocols for settling court-imposed fines to secure the release of eligible inmates.
Deputy Controller of Corrections Sanni Richard, the officer-in-charge, hosted the duo and provided detailed explanations on fine payment procedures, eligibility requirements, and safeguards to maintain transparency and adherence to judicial directives.
In an official statement from Public Relations Officer Osho Onimisi Joseph, the NCoS emphasized that any fine payments must strictly follow court rulings and regulatory guidelines, with no releases occurring outside proper channels and authorizations.
The service reassured the public of its commitment to holding inmates in safe, secure, and humane environments, aligned with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019 and global standards like the Nelson Mandela Rules.
It also praised philanthropic efforts supporting justice access, prison decongestion, and inmate welfare, while underscoring its focus on offender rehabilitation and societal reintegration.
The visit follows reports of Burna Boy donating substantial funds variously cited as $100,000 to $145,000 to VeryDarkMan for charitable causes, including clearing inmates' fines and hospital bills for the less privileged.
