In a major breakthrough, the last group of 115 students kidnapped from St. Mary's Catholic Private Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, have been released, according to officials.
This brings the total number of rescued children to approximately 265, concluding a harrowing month-long crisis that started on November 21, 2025.
Armed bandits raided the boarding school in the early hours of that day, abducting 303 students and 12 teachers in what became one of Nigeria's largest mass kidnappings in recent years.Shortly after the attack, around 50 students escaped on their own.
Then, on December 8, 2025, security operations led to the release of 100 more students.
The freedom of the final 115 marks the end of weeks of anxiety for families and highlights the persistent efforts by Nigerian security forces to secure their safe return.
While the exact details of the latest release including whether ransoms were involved remain unclear, the development offers relief amid ongoing concerns over school safety in northern Nigeria.
