The Benue State Police Command successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt and rescued the victim unharmed in the early hours of Christmas Day, December 25, 2025.
Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet disclosed that the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. along the Tiortu area, as Akume Geoffrey was traveling from Gboko to Makurdi.
The victim was reportedly intercepted by armed men suspected to be kidnappers, who forcibly abducted him and attempted to drag him into a nearby forest.
Following a distress alert, police operatives quickly mobilized, launching intensive patrols and a coordinated search of the area.
"On sighting the police patrol team and hearing the sirens, the suspects abandoned the victim and fled into the forest," Edet said.
Geoffrey was rescued unhurt, taken to Abinse Police Station for debriefing by Commissioner of Police CP Ifeanyi Emenari, and subsequently reunited with his family.
Efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.CP Emenari commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism, reaffirming the command's commitment to protecting lives and property, especially during the festive season.
He noted that patrols, stop-and-search operations, and intelligence-led policing have been intensified across strategic locations in the state, while urging residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly to security agencies.
