Benin Declares Coup Leader Lt. Col. Tigri, Two Officers Wanted After Failed Coup

Beninese authorities have declared Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, the self-proclaimed leader of Sunday’s abortive coup d’état, wanted nationwide along with two accomplices, Capt. Ousmane Samary and Capt.-Major Sambieni Castro.

The failed putsch unfolded in the early hours of December 7, 2025, when Tigri and a group of soldiers stormed the presidential residence in Cotonou and briefly seized the state television station.

Appearing live on air, Tigri announced that he was heading the “Military Committee for Refoundation,” declared the government overthrown, and suspended the constitution.

Loyalist forces swiftly countered the move, retaking control of the television network and other strategic sites within hours. While several participants in the plot were arrested at the scene, the three ringleaders managed to escape.

The government has mobilised all security agencies and issued nationwide alerts for the immediate arrest of Lt. Col. Tigri, Capt.

Samary, and Capt.-Major Castro, describing them as armed and dangerous.Authorities have urged the public to report any information on the fugitives’ whereabouts to the nearest police or military unit, assuring that the situation is now fully under control and that President Patrice Talon continues to exercise his functions normally.
