Bandits launched coordinated attacks on multiple communities in Kogi State on Sunday, December 14, 2025, killing at least four persons and abducting an unspecified number of worshippers during a church service.
In Àaaaz-Kiri community, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, gunmen stormed a branch of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) during morning service.
They fired sporadically to disperse residents before targeting the church, resulting in one confirmed death and several parishioners kidnapped.
Almost simultaneously, another group of bandits struck settlements in Mopa Muro Local Government Area around 4 a.m.In Jamroro settlement, located between Oke-Agi and Takete Isao, and largely inhabited by Tiv farmers, two persons were killed.
In a separate assault near Ilai Grammar School, occupied mainly by relocated Bassa farmers, one person was killed and three others abducted.
The attackers operated for over an hour across the locations before security forces could respond.Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, condemned the attacks, describing the security situation in the district as "worrisome."
He noted that worshippers kidnapped from a Cherubim and Seraphim church in Yagba East two weeks earlier remain in captivity, and called for urgent federal and state intervention to address the escalating banditry.Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, expressed sympathy for the affected communities in Illai and Okeagi, stating that efforts are underway to restore security.
He assured residents that the situation would be brought under control.The state government has yet to issue an official statement on the incidents.
The Kogi Police Command spokesperson, CSP William Aya, did not respond to inquiries at the time of reporting.
The attacks have heightened fears among residents in the affected areas, many of whom have reportedly fled their homes.
