Army Rescues Abducted Passengers After Fierce Clash with Sea Pirates in Cross River

Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully foiled an abduction and rescued four passengers who were seized by suspected sea pirates on the Nigeria–Cameroon maritime border, security sources disclosed on Thursday.

The victims – Ebuka Clinton, Alice David Albino, Usin Divine, and one other were traveling in a commercial speedboat from Ikang Beach in Bakassi Local Government Area, Cross River State, to Isanghele Fishing Pond in Cameroon on 2 December 2025 when they were ambushed and taken hostage.

As the pirates attempted to flee deeper into the creeks with the captives, they encountered a Nigerian Army patrol boat.

In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately before abandoning their victims and escaping toward Cameroonian waters in another speedboat.

One of the rescued passengers, Blessing Bassey Edem from Ikang, sustained a gunshot wound to her right buttock.

All victims were immediately evacuated and are currently receiving treatment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where medical officials say they are responding well.

Military authorities have intensified patrols along the affected waterways to deter further attacks and ensure the safety of maritime travelers in the region.
