Army Arrests Notorious Bandit Leader, Fidelis Gayama in Benue Operation

Troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari, operating under the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have arrested Fidelis Gayama (also referred to as Fidelis Guyama), a notorious bandit leader accused of orchestrating multiple kidnappings and armed robberies in the North-Central region.

The arrest took place on December 21, 2025, during a precision intelligence-led operation in Vaase community, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.

Gayama, described by security sources as a high-value target long on the wanted lists of agencies in Benue and Taraba States, is believed to be a key mastermind behind criminal activities terrorizing communities and travelers along the Benue-Taraba axis, including the Kente-Wukari Road.

Preliminary investigations have linked him closely to another wanted bandit known as Aka Dogo (or Dogo), whose gang has been disrupting movement and security in border areas.

The operation was hailed as a major breakthrough in efforts to curb banditry in the region.

Commander of 6 Brigade and Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their professionalism and precision, stating that the arrest represents a significant setback for criminal networks operating in Benue, Taraba, and neighboring states.

Gayama is currently in military custody and is expected to be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to sustaining aggressive operations to restore peace and security, while urging the public to continue providing timely intelligence to support these efforts.

This development comes amid ongoing military campaigns against insecurity in the North-Central zone, where banditry and kidnappings have posed persistent challenges to residents and economic activities.
