Armed assailants have abducted around 18 passengers along the Benin-Akure highway in Edo State, Nigeria, highlighting ongoing security challenges on major roads in the region.
The incident occurred near Obarenren village in Ovia North East Local Government Area. Witnesses reported that the gunmen emerged from the bushes, firing shots into the air to create panic before forcing the victims off the road and into the surrounding forest.
Edo State Police Command spokesman, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the kidnapping and stated that a joint security task force has been deployed to track down the perpetrators and rescue the victims.
"We are actively pursuing the abductors through a coordinated manhunt," he said.
No group has claimed responsibility, and details about the victims or any ransom demands remain unclear at this time.
Authorities are urging travelers to exercise caution on the highway and report suspicious activities.
This abduction adds to a series of similar incidents on Nigerian highways, where kidnappings for ransom have become a persistent threat.
Security forces continue operations to apprehend the suspects and ensure the safe return of those taken.
